Project #1 - Fuits are Awesome!!

Create a heightened experience to sell a product (through EMOTION, FUNCTION = VALUE)
Sell an ordinary object using New Media as your vehicle
Sell an ordinary product through a heightened experience


TOPIC:
PROBLEM: Not enough kids are eating fruits (bananas, apples, oranges, pineapple, watermelon) these days. They're eating too much candy.

OBJECTIVE: Get kids to eat more fruits (specifically your given fruit)

TARGET MARKET:
· Tweens and Teens
- Research strategies:
· What are kids into these days? How can we connect with them?

REQUIREMENTS:
Choose 1 of 5 different fruits that are all competing to be eaten
· List all the advantages/disadvantages
· Determine all the differentiating factors of your fruit
· What makes it unique
· Consider all other fruits competition


· Create a New Media driven campaign that will make your fruit irresistable to the target demographic (cool, tasty, awesome). Can your experience prove to be valuable and memorable. How will you position your fruit?
· You have all the tools of New Media at your disposal (Web, Video, Audio, Viral Marketing) to create this fantastic, innovative experience.
· Remember the definition of New Media
· The sky is the limit. You have no budget. We will celebrate innovation, the cool and the fantastic! You have the best programmers at your disposal.

· First design the campaign and concept (what are the main components?)
· Map out the journey of the campaign (sketches)
· Create a Website that is the main hub of the CAMPAIGN:
· What sections should it have?
· What should it do?


DO:
- Write down everything you know about this topic
- Immediately brainstorm 3-6 concepts/ideas/ways of tackling/selling your fruit
- Map out the narrative of your campaign (3 different directions)

FINAL DELIVERABLES:
- Macro map of the campaign
- Play out the narrative using storyboards
- Zoom in on the homepage of the site (2-3 more if needed)
- Lots of annotations
- Please create a bound book with all the above contents (ideal size - 8.5x14 or 11x17) (due March 4)


GRADING CRITERIA:
1. Successful completion of all required elements (all essential elements have been CLEARLY laid out in the previous section). Failure to complete any of these required elements will result in the loss of marks.
2. The ability to make proper decisions regarding major issues addressed in class lectures. These issues include; ideation, conceptualization, storyboarding and research
3. Students will also receive marks for their participation in in-class critiques and professionalism when presenting their own project.
4. Students will be graded on how well they can stay on task throughout the duration of their project schedule. Failure to meet any of the class deadlines will result in a loss of marks.
5. The class will evaluate the success of the overall experience (the more rewarding the experience, the better the grade)

Blue Sky Creativity: 30
All aspects of presentation (in-class, blog and speaking): 20

OBJECTIVE: Find new and creative ways to promote yourself, creativity and portfolio

TARGET MARKET:
- The creative industry (Ie. Creative Directors)
- Other designers/creatives (Community Respect)


REQUIREMENTS for HOMEWORK - DUE February 4th:
Present 2-3 different pieces for your portfolio that you feel are your strongest and say the most about you.
· List all your pros/cons/quirks
· Determine all your differentiating factors

Course Outline

New Media/Creative Interface Design+Spatial Applications
Instructors: Tak Yukawa and Cindy Sheldon
Duration: First 6 weeks = Tak Final 6 weeks = Cindy
Start Date: Thursday, January 21st, 2010
Break: February 8th - March 3rd, 2010
End Date: Thursday, March 18th, 2010

Students will learn how to create meaningful interface driven by solid CONCEPTS and strong NARRATIVE. They will learn how to create memorable, uplifting interactive/new media EXPERIENCES that are balanced with successful usability practice. From commercial to private life, students will learn the role that NEW MEDIA is playing in all realms of SOCIETY. Time will be spent discussing the on-screen application and psychology of a computer user in ISOLATION and in the WEB 2.0 COMMUNITY

By the end of this course, students should be able to:
- Understand and apply fundamental principles of NARRATIVE and STORYTELLING within the realms of New Media
- Effectively ANALYZE and PROCESS collected data into useful creative tangents pertaining to New Media/Interactivity
- Translate CONCEPTUAL ideas into effective INTERFACE/NEW MEDIA design and applications
- PREPARE and PRESENT their designs with confidence and professionalism

Teaching Methods:
This course will be delivered through a variety of lectures, in-class discussions, lab time and reviews with the instructor.

Workload:
This course concentrates heavily on student-instructor interaction. It is imperative that students are present and prepared to work the entire 4 hours, as well as a substantial amount of time each week outside of class to complete horizons and research assignments.

Required Supplies:
- A computer and Adobe Creative Suite Programs (Primarily Illustrator, Photoshop and Acrobat Pro)
- High-speed Internet access
- Blogger account (Google)
- Google DOCS account (OPTIONAL)

Required Supplies:
- Sketchbook
- Drawing pencils
- Fine line ballpoint pens and different sized multi-tip black markers (Sharpie)
- A minimum of 3 different color Highlighters
- Other sketching tools may be required during the course (ie: Pencil, Markers, and Papers), and will be determined by the student’s comfort level, preference or by instructor request.
- A computer and Adobe Creative Suite Programs (Primarily Illustrator, Photoshop and Acrobat Professional)
- Memory Card/Key for digital files (ideally 1 gig)

· Did it address a problem, opportunity or need?
· How you present is up to you
· You will be graded on how well you present this narrative

· Assignment #1: Each student presents their findings
· The User Experience in New Media
· The Concept/Metaphor in New Media
· Lateral + Vertical Thinking
· Mechanics of a problem
· Creation of Narrative/Storytelling

· Animation techniques - creating comps using acrobat

· Introduce project (portfolio project)
· HOMEWORK: Each student is to bring samples that represent the body of their design portfolios. Ready to present to the class.
